Migrating from SuiteCommerce Standard to SuiteCommerce Advanced without disturbing the ERP underneath
The client had outgrown what SuiteCommerce Standard would let them change. The migration to SuiteCommerce Advanced unlocked full front-end customisation while leaving the existing NetSuite ERP ecosystem — and the operational data in it — untouched.
Context
SuiteCommerce Standard had been the right choice at launch: quick to stand up, little to maintain. As the storefront became a serious revenue channel, the theme-level customisation it allows stopped being enough. Each new requirement had to be argued down to what the platform would permit rather than what the business wanted.
Brief
Move to SuiteCommerce Advanced for full control of the front end, without a re-implementation of the ERP behind it. The NetSuite ecosystem, its data and its integrations had to come through the migration unchanged.
Approach
SCA is the same commerce platform with a different development model — Backbone.js-based extensions and SuiteScript rather than theme configuration — so the migration was a front-end re-platform rather than an ERP project. Scoping drew that line explicitly and held it.
Developer handoffs were coordinated around that boundary: front-end work proceeded against a stable ERP contract, so the two never blocked each other. QA covered the customisation surface and, separately, regression on the ERP integration points that were supposed to be unaffected — the ones nobody thinks to test are the ones that break.
Governance
UAT run with the business team rather than for them, with acceptance explicitly theirs to give. Defined test strategy covering both the new front end and regression on the untouched ERP integrations. Coordinated developer handoffs and release readiness confirmed with the client before go-live.
Outcome
The storefront moved to SuiteCommerce Advanced with full front-end customisation available to the business, and the NetSuite ERP ecosystem continued to run through the migration without disruption.
